In most cases the answer is yes. If your house was originally designed for an open fire then we will more than likely be able to install a multi-fuel or wood burning stove.

Stove’s rated 5Kw or below don’t normally require any air vent. This is certainly the case for most homes built before 2008.

All open fires do require an air vent.

I personally prefer to fit all freestanding stove’s in a chimney with a new flexible liner, Hetas & even stove manufacturers are also strongly recommending it nowadays.
Being in the industry for many years now I have heard far too many stories where liners were not fitted and the emissions caused harm.
Installing a liner is peace of mind for both myself the installer, and you the customer that the chimney won’t leak and cause anyone any harm.
Also chimney fire risks are greatly reduced in chimneys that are lined.
Another positive is that the Stove manufacturers efficiently rating is also greater achieved with a liner attached.

In my experience Stove’s are one of those things that generally you get what you pay for. If like me you would like your stove to keep burning for long periods, then I personally wouldn’t rest peacefully with a poor quality stove. Saying that most of the budget stoves, so long as purchased from a reputable supplier are so much better than they used to be.
I recommend you get the best stove that your budget allows, after all the install procedure is the same.

This depends on where you live! It is best to check with your Local Authority, if they state that you are in a Smoke Controlled area (most urban areas are) then you will require a Defra approved stove to legally burn wood on. If you are only ever going to burn Smokeless coal only then it is not an issue. If you don’t live in a Smoke controlled area then these restrictions do not apply.

However all new Stoves should now carry the Eco 2022 compliance requirements, Not applicable to Stoves manufactured before January 2022. (Defra approved rules for Defra areas are still applicable).

Yes! As long as it’s a HETAS Approved or a Genuine CE marked stove. It must also be compliant to burn the fuels that you intend to burn in your area.
I encourage those however who ask first to purchase their stove from a reputable retailer. The reason for this is they can give expert advice on the right stove for you, your area and also will have the manufacturers backing for the full guarantee period.

Generally Smokeless Coal or Wood. Regardless of what Fuel you burn it needs to be Clean, Dry & Untreated!
The manufacturers instructions will tell you what fuels are suitable for their model of stove.
(User Instructions can usually be downloaded from the manufacturers website if you don’t have them to hand).

The Short answer is Wood. However, there are many variations other than just Hard-wood & Soft-wood logs. Becoming more popular now and are compliant to burn on a Wood burning stoves are Wood Briquettes & Heat Logs, also Pellets, these are made from recycled material so come under the banner of Bio-Fuel. There is also Wood-Chippins that we are seeing more of nowadays.
Regardless of what Wood you burn it needs to be Clean, Dry & Untreated!
We recommend that Moisture content of Wood Logs should be no higher than 18%.

I suggest that people wanting to burn logs throughout the winter months should prepare, stack & store their wood during the warmer months in a well ventilated store such as a purpose built log store and more importantly to keep them dry.

Yes. A stove that is used frequently should be swept at least once a year. This ideally is during the warmer weather months.
With use, soot, deposits and tar can build up which reduces the chimney’s draw, this can make the stove run badly and even cause a chimney fire.
I recommend that you use a Registered Chimney Sweep only! As they are fully insured and know how to keep your stove in good safe working order.

Wood-burning stoves burn wood much more efficiently on a solid base, while multi-fuel stoves have a slotted grate and ash-pan.
This means that wood ash falls through the grate into the ash pan and becomes waste before it can re-burn, making multi-fuel stoves with wood less efficient and requiring more frequent cleaning.
If you intend on burning Smokeless Coal then you will require a Multi-fuel Stove, however, If you are only ever are going to burn wood, then we recommend going for a dedicated Wood burning stove.
